2016 Chardonnay Releases

21 August 17

The 2016 harvest began with a very promising flowering and the vineyards had a healthy crop level. The early part of the summer was terrific and we were looking forward to an excellent harvest. Some rain and warm weather in late February dampened things a little and when harvest began in early March we had to be very selective about what we picked - similar to 2011 and 2012. Hand harvesting in a year like this is crucial and our crew have done a great job in sorting through the fruit to deliver clean, ripe grapes to the winery.

The single vineyards - Mate's Vineyard, Hunting Hill and Coddington really do show their class in a vintage like this and the resulting wines are brilliant. Tasting these wines before and after bottling we see a supple texture and richness to all the wines that we expect from our top level Kumeu Chardonnays. It is clear that this is a better vintage than we initially thought and we are delighted with the results.

2016 Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay

Hand harvesting in a vintage like 2016 is crucial in maintaining the high standard we have set for the Estate Chardonnay. The nose is immediately fragrant and peachy with a touch of mealiness. The texture supple and with a beautiful bracing acidity on the finish. The wine is delicious now and will provide beautiful drinking over the next 6 years.

2016 Kumeu River Coddington Chardonnay

Usually the most flamboyant wine when young, the 2016 Coddington has a beautiful nose showing the rich peach aromas and luscious creaminess we expect from this vineyard. The 2016 is supple, beautifully balanced and deceptively easy to drink at this early stage. No doubt this wine will also take on lovely bottle age as it has done with previous vintages.

2016 Kumeu River Hunting Hill Chardonnay

This wine has fragrant lemon/lime blossom aromas on the nose that typify the lovely perfume we always get from Hunting Hill. The class of this vineyard shows through in 2016 where conditions were not always perfect. The fruit from Hunting Hill was clean with beautiful flavours that show through in the finished wine with a supple texture an lingering finish. As with previous vintages of Hunting Hill we expect this to drink well for 6 – 8 years.

2016 Kumeu River Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay

The Mate’s Vineyard is usually the most reserved and unyielding when young with a nose that is very closed, just giving hints of the golden queen peach and mineral notes that we expect from Mate’s Vineyard. On the palate however, the flavour is very concentrated and distinctly richer than the other 2016 wines. Mate's Vineyard has a perfect balance and freshness that sets this wine apart and makes it wonderful. This is a wine of immense concentration that will be very long lived.
